When you enroll for LSU you can expect three days of intensive hardware and software training at Wyatt Technology's Santa Barbara laboratory. You can also expect to have a lot of fun, even though you're working hard! Register Now!
Topics covered at LSU:
- Introduction to light scattering theory and applications
- The use of a Zimm Plot to determine the molar mass, the radius, and the second virial coefficient of a dissolved sample
- Analysis of unfractionated samples through batch or microbatch techniques
- Coupling Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) with Multiangle Light Scattering (MALS) to determine the absolute molar mass or radius distribution of a polymer sample
- The use of SEC/MALS data to determine polymer conformation, branching, and intrinsic viscosity
- The determination of dn/dc values through on-line and off-line techniques
- The calibration and use of UV and RI detectors
- Instrument setup, maintenance, and flow cell cleaning
- Assessing the quality of light scattering data
- Characterization of polymers and macromolecules using Wyatt Software
- Quasi-Elastic Light Scattering (QELS) for the determination of Hydrodynamic Radius
- Application-specific seminars covering Field-Flow Fractionation (FFF) techniques, treatment of light-absorbing and polarizing samples, conjugated proteins, and much more!
- The history of light scattering and a tour of the world's most extensive Light Scattering Museum conducted and narrated by Dr. Philip Wyatt
Topics covered at Dyna-LSU:
- Introduction to dynamic light scattering theory and applications
- The use of DLS autocorrelation to determine the diffusion coefficient, hydrodynamic radius, and polydispersity of an unfractionated, dissolved sample
- Hands-on DLS analysis of unfractionated samples using batch cuvette techniques
- Coupling Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) with dynamic light scattering to determine the radius distribution of a dissolved sample
- Instrument setup, maintenance, and cuvette cleaning
- Assessing the quality of dynamic light scattering data Characterization of polymers and macromolecules using Wyatt Software
- The history of light scattering and a tour of the world's most extensive Light Scattering Museum conducted and narrated by Dr. Philip Wyatt
The lessons learned in LSU and Dyna-LSU will be of tremendous benefit to those individuals who:
- Purchase a new DAWN, miniDAWN and/or DynaPro light scattering instrument
- Change job responsibilities, and will be using a DAWN, miniDAWN and/or DynaPro for the first time
- Have been using a DAWN, miniDAWN and/or DynaPro and want to increase their knowledge of light scattering theory and its applications
- Are responsible for finding new applications for light scattering within their research group
Teaching Format:
The lessons are taught by combining lectures, quizzes, hands on lab work, and individual instruction based upon the background and application of each student. The LSU Training Manual and CD is a valuable take-home resource for practical applications. With ten instructors and a maximum of 18 students there is ample time for individual help. Students are encouraged to bring their light scattering data files for individual consultations. Social time is also scheduled to allow the students to learn from each other and to interact with Wyatt Technology's staff in a more relaxed atmosphere.
Customer Testimonials:
"It was fun, worthwhile and an unforgettable experience. From the first lecture to the closing remarks, it was all enlightened education:
new, well organized; useful and interesting. I am grateful beyond description. Your group showed me a highly sophisticated and informative technology state-of-the-art in analytical chemistry"
-T. E., Consumer Product Company
"It was by far the best technology training course I have attended."
-R. G., University Professor
"Thank you for a very excellent training session, and a very pleasant time in Santa Barbara. You are exceptionally gracious hosts. I came away very impressed with your company, the people who work there, and of course, the equipment itself. My compliments."
-C. C., Pharmaceutical Company
"I do not think that I have ever learned so much during a three day period as I did at the LSU. I must say that you have an amazing enthusiasm to light scattering which you transferred to the rest of us."
-C. A., University Professor
"Thanks to you all for putting together such a great course. It was really terrific in all ways - the content, the variety, the
schedule, the notes, and above all, the instructors. It took me from feeling like I really had a lot to learn to feeling like
I am ready to go!"
-D. B., Pharmaceutical Company
"It was also great pleasure meeting
yourself and all the others at Wyatt. I know you must hear this from everyone
but please allow me to also add what a truely great learning experience and
environment the LSU course was. Well organized, pleasant atmosphere and not at
all overbearing (course load vs time available), a credit to all those who
developed and implemented the course over the years."
-S. T., USAMRIID,Toxicology
